Key facts for exams

India is the 2nd largest producer of coal globally. The Chhota Nagpur plateau is known as the mineral heartland of India.

First oil well in Asia was drilled at Digboi, Assam in 1889, and its refinery is the oldest operating refinery in the world.

Jaduguda in Jharkhand was India's first commercial uranium mine (1967), followed recently by the massive Tummalapalle deposits in Andhra Pradesh.

Odisha is India's leading producer of iron ore and bauxite, while Madhya Pradesh leads in manganese and copper production.

Major mineral belts of India

India's mineral resources are concentrated in three main belts. The North-Eastern Peninsular Belt (covering Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, and Chhattisgarh) is the richest, hosting major coalfields like Jharia and Raniganj, and iron ore mines like Noamundi and Mayurbhanj. The South-Western Belt (stretching across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Goa) hosts magnetite iron ore at Kudremukh, lignite coal at Neyveli, and historic gold fields at Kolar. The North-Western Belt (Rajasthan and Gujarat) is rich in non-ferrous minerals like copper at Khetri, petroleum at Ankleshwar, and offshore deposits at Mumbai High in the Arabian Sea.
