The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is a central government scheme that helps households install rooftop solar panels through financial assistance.
Launched in February 2024, the scheme aims to expand residential solar power across India and enable households to generate electricity themselves.
Eligible households can receive central financial assistance of up to ₹78,000 for a 3 kW rooftop solar system under the standard subsidy rates.
The subsidy depends on the installed solar capacity.
Solar capacity | Standard central subsidy |
|---|---|
1 kW | ₹30,000 |
2 kW | ₹60,000 |
3 kW | ₹78,000 |
Above 3 kW | ₹78,000 maximum |
The standard calculation provides ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the additional capacity up to 3 kW.
Special-category locations may have different rates under applicable guidelines. State-level assistance, where available, is separate.
The final installation cost depends on the vendor, equipment, roof conditions and other charges.
The scheme is intended for residential electricity consumers in India.
Basic requirements generally include:
A valid grid-connected residential electricity connection.
A suitable rooftop or permitted installation space.
Eligibility under the scheme's subsidy rules.
No conflicting subsidy already claimed for the same eligible solar installation.
Households should confirm technical conditions and installation permissions before placing an order.
Commercial installations do not receive the same residential central subsidy.
Applications are made through the official national portal.
Visit pmsuryaghar.gov.in.
Register using your state, electricity distribution company and consumer details.
Complete the rooftop solar application.
Select a registered vendor and follow the applicable approval procedure.
Get the solar system installed.
Complete metering, inspection and commissioning requirements.
Submit the required banking details and subsidy claim through the portal.
The exact workflow may vary with updated portal procedures and your electricity distribution company.
The scheme aims to help households generate enough solar electricity to offset up to approximately 300 units of monthly consumption.
However, this does not guarantee a zero electricity bill for everyone.
Actual savings depend on electricity consumption, solar generation, available sunlight, installed capacity, net-metering rules and applicable fixed charges.
A government update in July 2026 reported that some beneficiaries had received zero bills during particular billing periods, while other households experienced reduced bills.
Before applying, keep the following available:
Electricity consumer number and recent bill.
Registered mobile number and email address.
Property or installation-permission details where required.
Bank-account details for subsidy processing.
Installation and commissioning documents when requested.
Use the official portal and registered vendors to reduce the risk of misleading subsidy offers.
Is the subsidy ₹78,000 for every applicant?
No. It depends on eligible system capacity and the applicable subsidy category.
Can rural households apply?
Yes. Eligible residential consumers, including rural households with grid-connected electricity, can apply.
Will the government install the panels completely free?
No. The subsidy covers part of the eligible installation cost. The household generally pays the remaining amount.
PM Surya Ghar Yojana can help eligible households reduce rooftop solar installation costs and electricity expenses. Compare registered vendors, understand your electricity consumption and review the official subsidy rules before applying.
